So what is a keyword tool? Maybe you’re new to online marketing or to the internet in general and you’re constantly hearing about keywords and how there’s some “magic” tool that shows you how to find them.
Well it’s not magic and they certainly not uncommon, some are better than others, but they all typically serve the same purpose, and that’s finding keywords.
Before I jump into it, for those of you unfamiliar with what a keyword is let me break it down for you.
A keyword is:
“A word or concept of great significance…an informative word used in an information retrieval system to indicate the content of a document.”
Simple enough, it’s essentially the statement or subject of what something is written around.
For example, with this article here, you searched for something along the line of “What is a keyword tool?“, “What is a keyword?“, “How does a keyword work?” or vaguely similar.
Since my post here is geared towards answering these questions and is keyword specific, it popped up, and here you are. It’s Google’s way of ensuring people find what they are looking for.
So how is a keyword useful?
Now that you got a little bit of a better understanding it’s time to get onto what makes a keyword tool so valuable.
Like I said earlier, there are some deviations from tool to tool, but typically they offer the same three things, and that’s searches, traffic, and competition.
Searches are the amount of people searching for a specific phrase or word (typically per month).
Traffic is the amount of visitors you can expect to your site if you land on the first page of Google, Yahoo, etc.
Competition, this is the amount of competing sites also ranking for this keyword, so typically the lower the better. (but not in all cases)
This is useful because it gives you a foundation of what you can write your content around, the amount of visitors you can expect to get, and how competitive it’ll be to rank for that keyword.
So lets say you’re looking to write something about “Waterproof iPhone cases”, so you’re looking to target the keyword waterproof iPhone cases.
It has a little under 800 searches per month, with 130 competing sites, although that high search number might be tempting, this is something a little to broad and will be difficult to rank for.
So you can narrow it down to something a little more specific like “Best waterproof iPhone cases” and target your article around this keyword instead.
It has a little under 200 visitors per month, with less than 30 competing sites, a much better choice for your chances of ranking.
If you don’t rank then no matter how engaging or wonderful your site or content is, you’ll be wasting your time.
You’ll be better off targeting several different low competition keywords and ranking, rather then targeting a high competition keyword and not ranking.
Rankings result in visitors which can ultimately lead to more conversions, meaning more money in your pocket, which at the end of the day isn’t a bad thing.
A keyword tool is absolutely ESSENTIAL to a marketers success online, since people (traffic) are the bloodline of your business, knowing how to find them is a tool worth having.
